After a celebrated theatre career at Bellingham High School, Teri Grimes is teaming up with BAAY staff as guest director of the 5 Tony Award-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone! A meta-musical about musicals, the comedy harps on the hype and turns tropes on their heads.

Learn how to costume with Dana Crediford. Students will research, design, and sketch costumes for the BAAY Pro production of The Producers. Camp will include walking field trips, sewing skills, collaboration with the cast of The Producers, costume creation, and crafting. Materials included.

Creation Lab

Ages 13 - 17

Explore the components of stories, music and lyrics, and add your two bricks to a new piece of music theatre in a radically student-driven setting. Whatever you help create, you’re doomed to present. An exciting and valuable opportunity for artists in or nearing high school to learn actively from each other. Theatre and music experience recommended but not required.

Creation Lab Junior

Joining a show usually begins with other people’s imaginations – in Creation Lab Junior, it begins with yours. Come for an introduction to show form, composition, improvisation, music and chord notation, lyrics and poems, then work together on writing a brand new one-act show!

Learn how to costume with Dana Crediford, and this time, it’s improvised! Students will research, design, sketch, and produce costumes for Creation Lab. The fantastical story of King Arthur, Merlin, and the legendary sword, told BAAY style. Lisa Markowitz brings her modern magic to this ancient story, resulting in an all-adventure play. Robin Hood may be involved.

Theatre Tech Camp

Ages 9 - 15

Ian Bivins brings his years of theatre tech experience to BAAY's studio playground. Students will learn the fundamentals of technical theatre, including lighting, set design, and implementation. Then they'll get to put some ideas into practice with BAAY's The Sword in the Stone and I Want My MTV Camp.

Participate in the dramatic emulation of some of the most iconic music videos ever to blare across the world's living rooms via the medium of MTV. There will be acting, lip syncing, dancing, and LOTS of cardboard!

Swing Camp

Directed by Damian Cade

Ages 14 - 17

Instructor Damian Cade has been teaching swing styles for over eight years. We’ll be learning famous line dances, solo jazz steps, and the fundamentals of partner dancing that will last a lifetime. No partner necessary. In his own words, “a 5, a 6, a 5, 6, 7, 8!”

Choir Camp

Resident music director Evan Ingalls brings his choral background to BAAY with a 2-week choir camp! Students in this choir intensive will focus on building solid vocal fundamentals while working together to present choral works at a combined choir concert for friends and family.

Vocal Jazz Camp

Ages 13 - 17

A ten-day camp where students get to work with an ensemble on a selection of pieces from the jazz standards repertoire, culminating in an evening combined choir concert for friends and family. A great opportunity to improve music reading, sight singing and improvisation skills! Experience reading music is required.

Circus & Clowning

Ever wondered what it was like to run away with the circus? You can find out in our Circus & Clowning camp. You'll learn juggling, clown, diabolo, plate spinning, balance, and much more. Taught by Wren: 20-year veteran juggler and circus instructor, and Della: physical comedienne, long-time member of the Bellingham Circus Guild, and co-creator and performer in The Real Food Show. We hope you join us in our circus adventure!

Drawing & Painting

Ages 6 - 12

In this exciting summer art camp, we’ll gain the confidence & ability to work in any medium. We’ll take the first week to learn to accurately draw what we see, learning the beginning of perspective and shading, through the use of charcoal, graphite, oil and chalk pastels. The second week will be about painting, using watercolors/acrylic paints with different techniques to change the look and texture, drawing inspiration from Monet and Van Gogh. The class will also include a walking field trip to visit a local gallery or museum downtown. By making art of the world around us, we learn to see it in all of its beauty.

Mixed Media & Sculpture

Ages 10 - 17

In this art course we’ll focus on three-dimensional art, starting the first week skill-building while learning the technique of collage, including use of photographs, upcycled materials, acrylic paints, textures, watercolors, and ink. During the second week, we’ll explore sculpture; we'll explore styles of sculpture while studying a variety of artists such as Leonardo DaVinci, Picasso, & Claes Oldenburg. Students will select an animal of their choice to build from, learn the use of building armatures, sculpting in clay, and painting to finish their pieces. The class will also have a one-day field trip to visit a local gallery or museum downtown.

Crafty Creatives: Dyeing/Felting

Ages 8 - 17

Let your love of creation be your guide. Seeking artists who want to explore new territory and enrich their knowledge of the earliest fiber arts. Week 1 - We will use alchemy to dye animal fibers. With these transformed materials we make vessels to hold our felted treasures. Week 2 - We will create felt portraits using the modern art of needle felting. Now of course every artist needs a thinking cap. Thus we will felt hats and learn the old art of millinery.
